Green smoothies and full blend juices are where it's at. We drink our blended vegetables and fruits in their entirety daily - edible skins, seeds, fibre and all... nothing extracted. The vast majority of us could use more roughage, fibre does the dirty work. Fibre acts like a broom and sweeps through your digestive track, getting in all the nooks and kicking the grime, dust and ancient crud out the backdoor. This clears the way so your body can absorb the concentration of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients from the blended plants. And if you're lucky, all that fibre might even smooth things over between you and your poo. Juice extraction has its pros, it can be a great way to get an extra dose of vitamins, people suffering from a myriad of digestive issues may do better sans fibre (read cold-pressed) and for healing, supervised juicing can be powerful medicine. Cracked Young Coconut Have you ever eaten a whole coconut? Young Thai Coconuts, are the big green ones, in the city you'll find the green outer layer husked off to make them easier to pack. Found at Asian markets and health food stores, the perfect specimen will be white and not pink, especially on the bottom. Water is filtered in through the plant as it grows and stored within the coconut's hard shell. The living water found within hydrates due to naturally occurring electrolytes and contains vitamin C, iron and calcium. Coconuts are low glycemic and delicious. You'll need guidance to open one of these babies. The cheapest route is a cleaver, they're about $20 at most kitchen stores. I use this method at home, ELove can give you a demo, she taught me.   The amazing maca, super loaded with over 60 micronutrients. It's 40% potassium, 10% zinc (which is a great cold-buster), high in iron, phosphorus, magnesium and silica. It has vitamin A, B, C, D, E, B12, B1, 2 and 3 and contains 18 amino acids. So in a nutshell, this plant will rock you. It's the strongest root on earth and has been around for over 10,000 years. Listen, it the Inca used it, it's gotta be good. Then again they also partook in some bizarre rituals so maybe they're not a great example. It's a potent plant*, so use sparingly, ideally mixed with sweet treats like cacao desserts or fruit shakes. *do we need to remind you it's for oral consumption only?

Pomegranate Pomegranates are easy to find this time of year and they're packed with minerals and nutrients like vitamin C and lots of Bs. The seeds are the most beautiful ruby-red colour and delicious on salads or as a late night snack. Many avoid this fruit as it's a bit messy to get into and can stain your fingers and clothes. But we have a trick to save you some trouble. Cut an X into the top of the pomegranate about 1" deep, fill a bowl with water and submerge the fruit, you can break it into four sections by prying it apart where it's been cut. The seeds will fall out easily under the water and sink to the bottom while the membrane floats. Pour the water and the debris off the top and you're left with the tasty seeds and no mess. Throughout my journey to rid my daily life of processed food and focus on what really counts - beautiful whole foods, I've realized that I can eat avocados guilt-free. The avocado is beautiful. Even visually, it's gorgeous. Dark and pebbled on the outside and perfectly green and smooth on the inside. They are packed with nutrients, phytochemicals, monounsaturated fat, more potassium than a banana and contain a wide array of essential vitamins (B's, E, & K). And let's not forget the taste. Personally, I could eat one everyday. Oh yeah, I do. So when Ron introduced me to his "GuacaSalsaMole" dish, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Over the 2 weeks that he and Simmah were visiting, the dish was made constantly. Here's what you need: 6 avocados, diced 8 – 10 Roma tomatoes 1 bunch of cilantro, finely chopped 2 fresh limes - juiced ½ large red onion chopped 2 tbsp freshly ground cumin 1 tbsp freshly ground pepper 1 tbsp Himalayan sea salt, or enough to season to your taste The avocados and tomatoes are roughly chopped (big-ish chunks) and the whole shabang goes into a bowl. Don’t think “precision” when making this dish. Think “chop ‘em up and chuck ‘em into a bowl”.
