Let's mix it up and pull the greens out of our green smoothies. Keep in mind leafy greens are essential but it's important to mix it up, variety is what really allows us to thrive on a plant based diet. This smoothie is loaded with veggies, it's delicious and a nice change. The Vortex Makes 1Ls 2 cups water 3 ice cubes 1/2 red beet 1/3 zucchini 1/2 organic apple, fuji or gala 1 organic oranges 1 organic carrot 1" ginger, peeled 1 tbsp hemp Peel the oranges, but leave the skin on everything else. Blend smooth and down all that veggie love. Thanks Gosi for the inspiration, as always.

Our Naked Burrito inspired today's daily email to our Goodies. It went something like this:
Holy Guacamole! Here are a few interesting facts about this ancient concoction.
  1. Back in the 1900's a Spanish-English pronunciation guide listed guacamole as a "salad of alligator pear". Charming.
  2. On two days a year: Super Bowl Sunday and Cinco de Mayo, over 20 million pounds of avocados are used for guacamole.
  3. Early recipes from the California Avocado Advisory Board (Calavo), published in the 1940s, were accompanied with a pronunciation suggestion: "Say Huakamole".  (TOTAL SIDEBAR: Could you imagine the inter-boardroom fights at Calavo coming to the above mentioned pronunciation suggestion? "I don't care what you say, I think it should be pronounced GUAC-amole"......"What? That's simply madness, you know it originates back to the Aztecs, they would have never accepted that pronunciation, you are knowingly compromising the integrity of the avocado, and I will not stand for this insubordination, I think you should leave...all in favour, say I.")
  4. Here's a redic delish recipe for an amazing guac-salsa dip. Enjoy.

Sorauren Snow Awe yes, the question of warmth comes up around living food a lot. Especially this time of year. Everyone is unique when it comes to their dietary needs, but I believe in maintaining 60% raw foods during the Canadian cold season, so green smoothies, salads and other fresh plant-based treats. While the remaining 40% should be warming, cooked foods... and I'm not talking about a piping hot pepperoni pizza either.
  • Things that grow under the soil tend to make us warmer like sweet potatoes, carrots, or maca.
  • Squash also has a great warming effect on the body and they make delicious soups.
  • Spices are helpful, think cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cayenne. Add these to smoothies, or hot teas. Easy way to spice things up and warm yourself at the same time.
  • Beans and legumes are so satisfying, sprout them before cooking for an extra nutrient kick.
  • Grains are both grounding and warming, stick to gluten free options, my top three are quinoa, amaranth and long grain wild rice.
Check out some of our soup recipes here and my fav turmeric smoothie here and maybe invest in a pair of slippers.

Bunch of Coronation Grapes Best grapes ever... coronation grapes, very popular in Canada cause they're Canadian and available only in September. I love them, they remind me of that deep purple grape juice I drank as a kid. Here is a delicious smoothie recipe that tastes just like grape juice, but with way less sugar and way more good stuff. Grape Juice Smoothie Makes 2Ls 2 leaves organic purple kale 1 handful organic spinach OR bok choy 1/4 zucchini 1 organic fuji apple 2 big handfuls coronation grapes 4 cups filtered water 10 drops stevia (optional) Blend it up, drink it down. Check your teeth. Side note: If your roomie tells you their mother never let them have grape juice as a kid cause they spilled too much, that probably means they shouldn't have grape smoothie as an adult. Confirmed.
