Photo Cred Cat Happy Thursday everyone, the sun may not be shinning but it's trying and the air is mild. Big sigh of relief. We're getting there. Fantastic question from KJ, a friend of THE GOODS and owner of Peaks & Rafters on Dupont and Christie.
I'm a longtime Vitamix user- my entire family has been for years. Recently my Dad started adding fancy things like white chia seeds, ground flax, omega oil and bee pollen. Can all these things be mixed together in my green drinks or shall I stay the course and stir clear?
Yes all those things are fine, great actually! Though I'd suggest using only one "extra" per smoothie as they can be expensive and more than 5 ingredients per drink is plenty. If you add too much stuff your body can't process it all and you just end up expelling it. Waste of really good food. Thanks girl! We love you and your question. Tell your dad we said good work!

Oh chia, we remember it as kids but who thought it would be all the rage again as adults. I first heard about eating chia seeds in Born to Run, amazing book especially in audio format... I was super intrigued by its history as a staple food for running tribes but it took me some time to figure out how to use it properly as it's a bit... weird? It's a low cal, high energy food with quality omegas and protein. Plus it expands about 9x the size when added to water which makes it filling. This is the reason we use it in so many recipes, not only is it good for you, but it fills you up and makes a great cream substitute due to the jelling quality. I use it to thicken some of our dressings for delivery too. Easy, healthy choice! For other great chia recipes check out our Insteada coffee, Magic Muesli and Nut and Seed Milk.

Insteada Here's a recipe that's popular with the agency kids, like Teres who can't get enough of it! I don't blame her, it's delicious and a real pick me up first thing in the morning. I recommend having it cold, but using warm/hot water works too. It's packed with amazing nutrient dense, high energy super foods so probably not the best snack before bed. Insteada' Coffee Serves 2 1 cup of filtered water 1 tbsp chia seeds 2 tbsp raw cacao powder 3 tbsp coconut sugar 1 tsp maca 1/2 tsp cinnamon dash cayenne dash Himalayan pink salt 4-6 cubes of ice OR 1 cup hot water Place all ingredients in blender and blend on high until smooth. Add ice OR hot water, blend to desired consistency. Allowing the chia seeds to soak for 15 minutes before blending will provide a silky smoothie texture.

Photo Cred Lisa Posting this one for my girl Basi who's looking for extra protein and energy to get through her intense boot camp! This recipe has about 7g of protein, and chia is a fantastic energy and diet food... yeesss chia like chia pet. Peachy Popeye 2 handfuls of organic spinach 2 local peaches, pit removed 1 med carrot, washed but not peeled 2 tbsp chia seeds, heaping 2 cups water Blend well, add extra water as needed. Enjoy! And Basi, you tell that handsome husband of yours I'm going to be checking in on him, he best keep up his greens.
